Jim Cummings

Ya know, kids, I can't deny that it's reaaaally tempting to just direct you all to the little bio I already did of Jim on the page for Darkwing's voice actor (in fact, here's the link), but that would be taking away some of Jim's credit for doing such a standout job in this role.

The first time I saw "Just Us Justice Ducks" - in other words, the first time I saw Negaduck - I was like "Who the HECK is that?!" Yep, I was puzzled beyond belief over who the heck the guy was who bore the startling resemblance to my hero, but was a villain. Once the shock wore off and I realized I quite liked Negaduck, I started to wonder if it could possibly be the same voice actor playing both DW and Negs. Actually, it was JUJD that got me started as a rather obsessive voice tracker - I'd make sure to tape the credits of any episode just to check the voices. (In some cases, I only taped the credits. Heh)

So really, it was Negaduck who got me started in paying attention to voice actors in general, and Jim Cummings in particular.

After seeing "The Little Mermaid", I've always thought that an actor who can play a good guy, then do a good job doing the same voice only evil, is a durn fine voice actor. And while DW and Negs aren't exactly the same voice, the differences and the similarities are really fascinating to pay attention to. The development of Negs's voice, from the first "Negaduck" episode where neither Posi- or Nega-DW actually sounds quite like Normal-DW, down to the later eps, is just striking; his voice got lower over time, more sinister, and in some ways (people will laugh at me for saying this, I just know it) more... well, sensual. I mean, sometimes he growls in a way that is almost mesmerizing, and I say that as a totally objective observer.

My personal favourite episode to talk about Jim's talent and creativity, however, is "Disguise the Limit", in which he does an impression of pretty much every single other character in the episode - Gosalyn, Launchpad, Sara Bellum, and Negs himself. And what's amazing is - he actually sounds like a third person! He doesn't just DO the Negaduck voice (well, he does at the very start of it), he does a third voice that sounds like - well, like Darkwing doing an impression of Negaduck!

The man is something else.

I've already given a LONG list, both of the characters he's played on DW and of an abbreviated list of the roles he's had over the years, but I thought I'd point out some of his best villainly roles while I was at it.

Those are just the ones that come to mind right now. He's had many many others, and I hope that continues for many years to come. ^_^ A man who can do heroes and villains with equal panache is an amazing man indeed!
