Q: Where does Negaduck come from? You mentioned that there were two versions of him.
A: Yep. Two Negaducks. *shudder* Hang on, 'cause this will be long. The character concept first appeared in the episode "Negaduck" (great name, huh?).
Megavolt, another villain, had developed a ray gun that separated negative and positive ions from any form of
matter. Darkwing got hit with it, and was split into two sides: his evil side, and his good side. His evil side
considered taking up a life of crime, for the profits, while his good side started thinking of things like helping
girls scouts and stuff. Sheesh. In any case, since the two looked exactly alike, much confusion ensued until
Gosalyn and Launchpad realized what had happened. Evil Darkwing got away from the others and set off to
find Megavolt and destroy his tron splitter so that the two sides could never be put back together. Meanwhile,
Good Darkwing and his friends also looked for Megavolt. Evil Darkwing found him first, and pretended to
want to team up with him so that he could get to the ray. In the process, he was hit with it again, and became
negatively galvanized. This caused his coloring to go all negative, and he got these awesome destructive energy
powers. At this point he named himself Negaduck. To stop him, Good Darkwing galvanized himself, too, and
basically good and evil faced off in this really weird, kind of trippy scene where they pretty much cancelled
each other out. In the end, they were reunited into the same person again.
Q: And the current Negaduck? Where did he come from, and how is he linked to the original?
A: This was never really entirely explained in the series. The episode that comes closest to explaining this is "Life, the Negaverse, and Everything" where it turns out
that Negaduck spends about half of his time in another dimension known as "The Negaverse". There, he rules supreme. It's identical, in theory, to St. Canard- only
everything seems to be the opposite. In that case, we can assume that this Negaduck was born in this other
dimension, and somehow found a portal to Darkwing's universe and started trying to take over it the same way he'd
taken over his universe. But what makes it confusing is that this episode aired after another episode with him in it-
"Just Us Justice Ducks", a two-parter in which Negaduck forms the Fearsome Five out of five of Darkwing's worst
enemies. Since the Fearsome Five are together in "Life, The Negaverse, and Everything", it seems like that episode
actually comes AFTER "Justice Ducks". In that case, Negaduck just shows up in the Darkwing world, and
everyone seems to be sort of used to him. As for how these two origins connect, it's not really known. There has
been a lot of speculation, though. Maybe Negaduck is from the same world as Darkwing after all. Maybe, as in
"The Secret Origins of Darkwing Duck", Negaduck is an evil, identical cousin. Hey, they look alike, they walk
alike, at times they even talk alike! Maybe Negaduck is the first Negaduck, recreated or never entirely destroyed.
There was going to be an episode that was meant to explain the link, but it was never completed since the third
season was never done. It was supposed to be called "Opposites Attack" and from what I've heard, it was actually
pretty darn confusing. If I knew anything about it, I'm not sure I'd be allowed to synopsize it here anyway, since it is
Disney's legal property and hasn't been publically released yet.
Q: What's Negaduck's real name?
A: We don't know for sure. Possibly Drake Mallard, if he is the Negaversion of Darkwing. But if not, then who knows?
Q: Have we ever seen Negaduck out of costume?
A: Oh, a few times, yeah. In "Negaduck", after Darkwing is split in two, both versions go home dressed as Drake
Mallard. So we have an evil Drake. But even if you don't count that, there have been a couple of times that we've
seen him in only boxer shorts (black with little skulls on them), and then there's "Let's Get Respectable"... That has to
be one of the more interesting episodes for Negaduck, in a way, since he uses various different disguises throughout it.
Q: What's Negaduck's relationship to Nega-Gosalyn?
A: Almost non-existant, fortunately for her. The kid doesn't seem too traumatized, so we might be able to assume
that either he doesn't pick on her much while he's around, or he's just really rarely around. But he obviously has noqualms whatsoever about having her killed along with Darkwing and
"The Friendly Four" (the Negaverse versions of the Fearsome Five,
minus one). Not like he cares- Negaduck doesn't seem to have a whole lot of need for friends, anwyay.
Q: But he must have a heart somewhere under that rough exteriour. Has he ever been in love?
A: In love? Negaduck?!? Well... In "My Valentine Ghoul", he pretends to be in love with Morgana for a while, to get
her to help him in some jewelry heist. Later on, however, he gets put under a love spell and really does fall for her,
although it's not a long-lasting effect. Other than that, I have yet to see any signs of Negaduck having a single romantic
bone in his body. My interpretation of Negaduck, as the show stands, is that he's sorta anti-relationship and in fact, anti-people.
But, there's more than one way to see any situation, so other people could look at the same eps and think that maybe, just
maybe, Negs is so nasty 'cause deep down inside he's lonely. *G* Or, another explanation. All I can say
is that on the show, he's never had a date! ^_~
Q: But really now.. How evil is Negaduck, exactly?
A: If we take the show at face value, he's pretty darn evil, kids. He has no remorse. If he dislikes
something his first instinct is to kill it, smash it, blow it up, shoot it, or do whatever is possible to totally annihilate
it. That's not just Darkwing, that's Gosalyn, everyone in the city, his teammates in the Fearsome Five... Well,
basically, everybody. There are certain episodes in which Negaduck is not after any specific treasure or loot-
he's just out causing mass destruction for the sheer joy of it. I guess it relieves tension. I don't know if I'd say
that Negaduck is actually evil PERSONIFIED. I mean, this is a Disney cartoon, after all. But he comes about
as close as they can get. In his earlier episodes, Negaduck's motivations were closer to those of a common
criminal, and although his actions showed the same lack of remorse or pity, his crimes were not so
violence-driven. He tended to make rather dumb mistakes, and that was how he would get caught- he'd trip
himself up, or Darkwing would get lucky. More and more often towards the end of the series, Negaduck's plots
bordered more on the side of "Sheer malice" than anything else. His dumb mistakes became less and less
frequent, while Darkwing's skills evidently honed themselves a bit better and he became more able to deal with
Negaduck in a competent way. Thus, as I said earlier, character development. ;)
Q: Okay... but, if Negaduck is Darkwing's opposite, then why doesn't he have good traits the same way that DW has bad traits?
A: Well, no one ever claimed that the writers were perfect. ;) Besides, it's also never been completely stated that Negs is Darkwing's opposite- he just looks like
him, and is evil.
Q: If Negaduck was created from darkwing, doesn't that make Negs Gosalyn's dad too? (submitted by toonsrcool@omnisky.net)
A: Well, yes and no. No, in that Darkwing isn't Gosalyn's real father, but her adopted one; so he's not a blood relative per se.
Yes, however, in that as a side of Drake, she does recognize him as being "part" of her father. But, since in his origin episode,
Darkwing was put back together into himself again, she'd consider HIM her only father and anyone else to be like a
clone of him. Negaduck, whether he is the original Negaduck (and thus, part of DW) or not, doesn't recognize any kinship
with Gosalyn, and she doesn't recognize any with him. At least, neither seem to. It is interesting, however,
that in the Negaverse Negs is Gosalyn's guardian. No explanation why is given - it just is that way. So, if you take the
idea that Negs hails from the Negaverse and is not just created from DW, then yes - he is Gos's father. Just not the
Gosalyn we usually see. ;) Does that make sense?
Q: So, did Negaduck adopt the NegaGosalyn? How did he come to be in charge of her? (submitted by fuzzybuttpony@aol.com)
A: They never really go into that. All they say specifically is "Gosalyn's guardian is Negaduck." This does imply that they know he's
not her real father, but it doesn't state that he's formally adopted her, or anything... I don't think she calls him "Dad" or any
variation thereof, I think she just sort of talks at him cheerfully. ;) So unfortunately - I can't answer that question,
but at least if you want to come up with your own answer you know you won't be contradicting what was said in the series. ;)
Q: In the episode "Negaduck", Negaduck has got the ability to fire blue blasts of energy, but further down the line he's dressed like Darkwing and uses guns. Why is that? (submitted by Jjab300@aol.com)
A: In that ep, Negs gains that ability only after becoming "galvanized" by Megavolt's tron-splitter ray - that is, after the original Darkwing has been split into pure
positive and negative twins, the negative one gets hit again. Since he has no positive side to split into, he becomes super-powerful in a negative-energy way.
That's where he gets the powers from; however, at the end of the episode, the effect is reversed and DW is put together again. Since he's got all his
posi- and nega- parts in the right places, there's no powers left over. Because of this, we can assume that even if Negaduck is the same Negs in
spirit who was created in that ep - ie, a part of DW - because DW is normal, he's obviously not physically the same Negaduck, but some kind of adaptation.
A super-powerless adaptation, unfortunately... or maybe not so unfortunately ^_~
Q: If Negaduck doesn't wear pants,
why did he wear "skull boxers"? (submitted by anonymous)
A: Comedic effect? *g* Some strange form of modesty? Or maybe there's just a rule that all Disney characters like to be dressed in at least one article of clothing, and if they don't have a shirt then they feel weird unless they have pants. Me not know. :D
Q: Why does ND wear yellow? Is that
the opposite of purple? (submitted by anonymous)
A: As a matter of fact, yes, it is! In the colour spectrum, yellow is directly opposite purple - the reason being because purple is the combination of the two primary colours red and blue, and the third primary colour yellow is absent from it. The opposite colour to red is green (blue + yellow), and the opposite colour to blue is orange (red + yellow). Of course, not of all of Negs's outfit is a spectrally-opposed colour scheme to Darkwing's; but, as Kim McFarland pointed out in a fanfic, there's a kind of snake that has the colours of yellow, red, and black. So it's possible that red and black were chosen to go with the yellow because of that snake (which, by the way, is quite deadly).
Q: Why can't anyone tell the difference between ND and DW? ND always wears the black mask. (submitted by anonymous)
A: Probably for the same reason that people thought that Launchpad was Darkwing, even though he's significantly taller and differently-shaped. They're just not paying attention to the details. :P
Q: since negaduck's so mean to the f5 and is always treating
them wronglylike in the ep. 'life the negaverse and everything' why
don't the f4 overthrow him cause they don't really need him hey he's the
only guy who doesn't have super powers and what would happen if they did? (submitted by negaduck.mistress@Megavolt.zzn.com)
A: Well, in "Jailbird" the F4 basically did "overthrow" Negs, more or less. He even had all their powers at the time. And you know why it worked? Because Darkwing helped them to do it. The reason they don't overthrow Negaduck, and probably never will, is because they simply aren't smart enough. Negaduck might not have any superpowers but he's smarter and meaner than all the others put together - so it's unlikely that the Fearsome Four would be able to take Negaduck down without outside help. Now, if they had outside help, who knows what would be the result?
Q: Does Negaduck have a son? (submitted by Greenflower46@aol.com)
A: No. Not in any official continuity anyway - I mean, I'm not including fanfiction. But in the shows and comics: no.
Q: Do the fearsome five get on Negaducks nerves and if so, how come he dosen't think of ditching them ? (submitted by carlagodfrey@nat.fr)
A: They do, and he does! That is to say, yes, they get on his nerves - quite a bit actually - and Negs makes it pretty clear that he only keeps them around because their powers are useful to him. He does ditch them in "Life, the Negaverse, and Everything" - as Quackerjack says, he never hangs out with them after they commit crimes - and then in "Jail Bird" he just steals their powers and dumps them completely.
Q: Negaduck has gotton Darwing alone at some points but never has tried to kill him, why? What does he want to do to Darkwing. (submitted by dnl@onecliq.net)
A: He's never tried to kill him? When has he NOT tried to kill him? :D He dropped him off a building in "Just Us Justice Ducks" for crying out loud! *G* I think Negs wants DW dead, dead, dead; and not just so that he's out of the way of his criminal schemes, but also for the fact that he hates him and wants him dead, dead, dead. ^_~ I do think that Negs is smart enough, though, to not make killing DW his only priority; if the opportunity does not immediately arise, he's not going to waste time trying it just for kicks. So he won't try to kill him EVERY time, but often enough. JUJD, the death trap in "Life, the Negaverse, and Everything", and so darn many guns...
Q: In your own words,Should The Fearsome five (Megavolt, Quackerjack, Bushroot, The Liquidator & Negaduck)ever team up with the men & women of F.O.W.L.? (submitted by justinsmith@msn.com)
A: They could, but if you ask me, they would have to be organized by somebody else. I don't think the FF would work well with an *organization* like that... someone else would have to be basically steering them all together. And it would have to be a large operation, with multiple purposes, to make good use of the different strengths of each organization. We're not talking just a "join together to overthrow Darkwing/rob a bank/etc" kind of thing, but something far larger... otherwise I think, as I said, their styles would completely clash. FOWL is interested in much larger-scale kinds of schemes than the FF, on the whole.
Q: I have a question; in one episode, i distinctly remember Negaduck calling DW "his favorite cousin". Pleae explain that. (submitted by g_m_g2000@yahoo.com)
A: You are probably thinking of "The Secret Origin of Darkwing Duck", which is not in the least bit a true origin. ^_^ It essentially retells everything in the mythos of Darkwing, casting Darkwing as the almost-sole survivor of an alien planet, Negaduck as his evil cousin, Gosalyn as DW's superhero mentor, and Launchpad as... well, his sidekick. In any case, aside from the Launchpad part, it's even more fictional than the series itself. ^_~
Q: Boy, does NegaDuck have a bad temper? (submitted by shiningrockstar@comcast.net)
A: Boy howdy DOES he. The littlest thing can irritate him, and then? Out comes the chainsaw. :D
Q: What exactly is the deal with the Negaduck/Dr. Slug rivarly? I don't remember ever seeing Dr. Slug as a villain on the show. (submitted by squishytwig@aol.com)
A: Dr. Slug was mentioned twice but, aside from a very brief cameo at the beginning of "Inside Binkie's Brain", never actually appeared on the show. Still, Dr. Slug has apparently beaten out Negaduck for the place of #1 Most Wanted criminal in St. Canard (at least, as of "The Quiverwing Quack", which is the episode with that rivalry)... Given Negs's acts of deliberate cruelty, the fact that Dr. Slug still upstages him leaves to have to assume that Dr. Slug is pretty darn bad. ;) Then again, maybe he's NOT, and that's part of the insult! *G*
Q: This isn't a question, but for the question about why Negs wears the
yellow, I associated the yellow, black, and red with Adolf Hitler
because
the German flag is yellow, black, and red. And for the question "Why
doesn't the F4 leave Negs or overthrow him?" there is one simple
answer...CHAINSAW!!! (submitted by marvinmars@knology.net)
A: The yellow/black/red-Nazi connection might have been something they knew about, and it may have either helped them decide on the other colours or at least been a happy coincidence for the colour scheme after it was picked, but the yellow as the main colour was picked because it's directly across the colour spectrum from purple. *G* As for the black and red I guess because they're sort of threatening? That's very interesting trivia about the flag - I had not known that at all. (And I couldn't agree more about the chainsaw.)
Q: Concerning your answer for the question about the 'current
Negaduck''s origin, could you give me the link to the description of the
episode that was never released about Negs' origin, 'Opposites Attack'?
I've been curious/confused about this as well, and I'd like to read
about it, but since you can't post the description on your website... (submitted by patamon_2000@hotmail.com)
A: Unfortunately, to my knowledge there was never a description posted on the web. I got it from a LONG time ago on alt.fan.disney.afternoon, the old newsgroup. You might be able to try going to Google, since they have archived a lot of old newsgroup activity; I don't know if it's still available. I unfortunately lost my print-out, too, so I can't effectively summarize at this point. :P
Q: why doesn't nega duck bring all the villans ever faced togther
and destory him (submitted by trs3000@msn.com)
A: Well, that's sort of what the Fearsome Five was supposed to be about. And we saw how THAT worked out. ^_~ Negs could probably do it on a larger scale, but I'd imagine it would take a lot of time, and a lot of the really dangerous villains on the show don't seem to like working with others, so there would be a clash of egos - naturally, Negs would have to be the leader - so like I said, it would take time. Maybe he just never got around to it?
Q: Is there an episode where Negaduck is really big and has water
pouring out of where his arms and legs should be? I remember Darkwing
covering some other characters with his cape to protect them from
Negaduck. I have not seen this show since I was really little and that is the
only Negaduck thing that I remember. Is there an episode like that? (submitted by ferrariparty@yahoo.com)
A: That was the episode "Jail Bird", and the other characters are actually the remaining members of the Fearsome Five! Negaduck comes into possession of a mystic gem that steals the strength of other people and gives it to whoever is using the gem, so naturally he decides to use it on his "useless" teammates. He gets really huge and all the powers of Megavolt, Bushroot, and Liquidator - plus Quackerjack's wackiness, which he could do without. ;) Darkwing teams up with his usual enemies to take down Negaduck, even though they are smaller than normal, weak, and awfully whiny.
Submit a question!
Alrighty folks, that's it. No more questions. This was supposed to be for people to ask me questions about the show - not to spam me with random words sent by bots, not to ask me to conjecture on what a character's favourite food is or what they do in their spare time, and not to send me a million messages about how you are a character's wife. That's very fun for you, but what am I supposed to do with it? And, to be fair, I haven't updated the FAQ with the few valid questions I've received in something like two or three years. So, I'm afraid, no more submissions but please enjoy the stuff that's already up here. I'll try to get the remaining good ones up someday soon - it's hard with two kids - but if it involved anything like "What does so-and-so do when they're NOT being a villain?", it's not going up here. I can answer stuff from the show. I can't pull magic answers out of my hat. I didn't invent these characters. Sorry to burst your bubble. (And I promise, I'll change this message to be nicer when I'm less annoyed by the spam I've been getting from my good-natured attempt at letting fans have an interactive page. That'll show me, huh? Thanks for ruining everyone's fun, Internet.)
