Q: Who is she?
A: Assuming you mean other than her name, Morgana is a sorceress who comes from a long line of mystical ancestors. She comes from Transylvania, where her
family is looked upon as Monsters by the more mundane Normal folk. It would appear that there is a whole other race of these "Monsters", since Morgana has
introduced Darkwing not only to her extended family, but also the staff at the Eldritch Academy where she used to study. The whole place is a school of witchcraft
and the like.
Q: How did she and Darkwing meet?
A: Well, it all took place in the episode "Fungus Amongus". It was a dark and stormy night... There had been
this rash of robberies around town, see, with all these creatures of the night stealing pizza toppings. Bats and
spiders and ghostly wolves, etc, stealing pepperoni and whatnot. ...You think I'm joking?? Shame on you!
Anyway, Darkwing figured that the next step in the rash of robberies would probably be mushrooms, so he
went to McCawber Manor to speak to the proprietress- Morgana. She ran a mushroom business. While there,
they both were smitten with each other (him especially), although Morgana's Board of Directors didn't like
Darkwing one bit, no sir... Later, it turned out that Morgana was the one in charge of all the pizza topping thefts,
and she was playing Darkwing for a pawn. Her plan, it seemed, was to create a mushroom creature that had
every element of pizzas IN it. Unfortunately that creature was carnivorous at the moment- they hadn't quite
perfected it yet... Anyway, when her Board of Directors ordered Morgana to kill Darkwing and get him out of
the way, she wouldn't do it, and instead ended up helping him to defeat the others. Seems she really DID like
him after all! ^_^ In the end, she wouldn't let Darkwing arrest her, but instead she and her house simply
disappeared. But the door, so to speak, was left open for her return. And return she did!
Q: Are you sure she's a good guy?
A: Most definitely. Sure, in her next appearance ("Ghoul of My Dreams") she was again committing robberies, but this time it was with the very noble intention of
paying off her student loans! ...Okay, so that's not so noble. But give the gal a break, I've been there. Anyway, once again, she and Darkwing teamed up by the end
to fight the *real* bad guy. And after that, her appearances were increasingly positive. Usually she'd get Darkwing into trouble by accident, and have to get him out
again. In "Just Us Justice Ducks" she helped him fight the Fearsome Five, and in "My Valentine Ghoul" she proved once and for all (to a nastily doubting Darkwing)
that she was indeed on the up-and-up, by resisting Negaduck's attempts to win her back to a life of crime! Seems that, whatever criminal tendencies Morgana had,
they've been washed away by the power of Love. Awwwwww.
Q: How is her name spelled? I've seen it as Macabre, McAwber, Macawber...
A: This is one of those things that, on the Internet, never really dies and has inspired heated debates which have at times led to flame wars. FLAME WARS! Over
how to spell a cartoon character's NAME! Well, I say, however you wanna spell it- go ahead. I happen to like the way I spell it- I think it's aesthetically pleasing.
One person said that the original script of an episode had spelled it "Macabre" so THAT was official. Another said that the gateway over her house in "Fungus
Amongus" said "McAwber" if you looked really closely. (To me that means nothing; I've seen cartoons misspell the word "truck".) The answer? There is no one
answer!
Q: She and Darkwing are always arguing! Are they really in love?
A: I suppose that's a matter of opinion. Now personally, I think so. I've always thought they made a really sweet couple. Other people say they fight too much and
their relationship is emotionally immature; I can see that, I guess. (My opinion is, they just need to work on it and grow a little, but hey.) For the record, Tad Stones
(the creator of the show) envisioned them as getting married after the series ended. So even though it's not official, he at least saw them as a permanent couple, for
what it's worth. ^_^
Q: What does a babe like that see in him?
A: Well, Morgana's main interest in Darkwing seems to be his mysterious nature. That was, without a doubt, what first attracted her to him; when they met, she liked
his name (started calling him "Dark" right away), and told him that she "enjoys the night". Talk about a vamp. *G* Anyway, after time progressed, the relationship
seemed to become a bit less shallow; where he had been attracted to her beauty, and her to his mysterious charm, there now seems to be a bit more to it. After all,
he's seen her at her worst- midway through a temper tantrum and zapping the daylights out of him- and she's been around him during the day, as Drake Mallard.
They've taken out the glamour and the mystery and still seem to like each other. And again, in terms of Morgana's interest, I think she's usually able to look past the
bragadoccio, the huge ego, and see a really decent guy. After all, for all his foibles, Darkwing is a brave and well-meaning man. He makes mistakes- LOTS of
mistakes- but with Morgana in particular he usually owns up to them eventually, and a learning experience is had by all.
Q: Have we ever seen the rest of Morgana's family?
A: Yooooou betcha! *g* There's mainly her father, Moloculo, who suffers from a definite Normal-prejudice; also Aunt Nasty (the cook of the family), Cousin
Globby, and... well, foop if it hasn't been too long since I've seen these folk. Anyway, they appear several times in fact; first in "Monsters R Us", when Darkwing,
Launchpad, and Gosalyn are transported to McCawber Castle in Transylvania; then in "Hot Spells", a visit to Morg's alma mater, the Eldritch Academy (Globby's
first appearance is in this ep). A few also pop up in "Malice's Restaurant", the episode showcasing Morgana's attempt at making a legitimate living. For the record,
Morgana's Board of Directors in "Fungus" are also relatives, including Uncle Nero and Granny.
Q: Do we ever see her feet?
A: Nope, never. In fact, if you look at episodes like "Just Us Justice Ducks", she doesn't even walk; she floats. Heh heh... Who wouldn't wanna be a sorceress? ;)
Q: Is there REALLY a Nega-Morgana? And if so, what does she look
like? (submitted by iamdarkwingduck@hotmail.com)
A: Unfortunately, Nega-Morgana never actually appeared on the show. In fact, she was never even mentioned.
The Nega-Morg that has appeared in a few fanfics is entirely the creation of whoever wrote that fanfic.
It's likely that there would have been a Nega-Morgana in existence, since there were Nega-versions of so many
other characters - apparently every character who is in the "normal" world...
Q: This isn't a question; it's more of a musing. It's
interesting to note that the word "macabre" means gruesome. And knowing
Morgana's...er...*interesting* family, it's entirely possible that the writers
of the Darkwing Duck series made Morgana's last name spelled "MacAwbre"
or "McAwbre". (submitted by Silverwolf@AOL.com)
A: This is entirely true. :) And it's yet another reason why I always say, the way that the
character's name is spelled isn't important, as long as it sounds like the way they pronounce
it on the show. ;)
Q: Just how many sorcery powers does Morgana have, and what are
they? That we've seen any way... (submitted by SnowyIcicles@yahoo.com)
A: Oooooh, um, that will take some thinking... I don't think there has been any particular limit to
Morgana's powers - she seems to have a spell for almost everything, although she doesn't have
any spells that can cure death, as we saw in "Dead Duck". ^_~ On the show, we have seen her
transmogrify (into yaks, pudding, flowers, etc), enslave (ie, with zombie-fying lipstick), levitate,
apparently communicate with animals (er, so to speak - spiders and bats, her familiars),
and just plain zap things (usually Darkwing). She did need power from Nodoff to put the city to sleep
in "Ghoul of My Dreams"; but of course, in the end both that ep and "Dead Duck" turned out to be a
dream of Darkwing's. So it would seem that the only times she can't do things are in Darkwing's
mind. *g* On the other hand, it is important to note that just because Morgana has spells for
all these things doesn't mean she can always perform the spells correctly; though her magical
abilities do seem to get more finely-tuned when she gets angry... ^_~
Q: How and why are the McAwbres' in
Saint Canard? (submitted by anonymous)
A: Well, aside from Morgana and her relatives-cum-business partners,
seen in "Fungus Amongus", the family itself actually is not in St. Canard.
Morgana's parents and various other relatives actually live in Transylvania; Morgana seems
to have some sort of teleportational spell in her house that transports people from St. Canard to
Transylvania and the McCawber domain. As for why Morgana herself is there: well, as far as one
can discern, she came to the city to break into business - even the shady sort of business she was
initially involved in - and even though that failed, she returned because of her attraction to Darkwing.
And of course, that has led to her family making appearances every now and again.
Q: Where did Morgana learn all the magic spells? (submitted by shiningrockstar@comcast.net)
A: At the Eldritch Academy, mostly, though some of it I'm sure she just picked up in her family; magic seems to come naturally to the McCawbers, like learning to read.
Q: Does she have a mother? (submitted by Annonymously Incorrect)
A: Presumably yes, though we never see her in the series. We don't even know her name.
