Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How old is Gosalyn?
A: I don't think the series ever states Gosalyn's age for sure, but the Darkwing Duck Bible says that she is 9 years old in the run of the show. Also, Gosalyn's best friend Honker does give his age (nine) in an episode; they're probably the same age.

Q: Is Darkwing Gosalyn's biological parent?
A: As stated in the Drake FAQ, no, Darkwing is not Gosalyn's birth father. He adopted her. Gosalyn was orphaned at an unspecified age, and lived with her grandfather, an inventor, until he was also killed. She then was moved to an orphanage, where her spirited nature (or "troublemaking nature" as some might see it) kept prospective parents from taking a chance on her.

Q: How did her parents die?
A: This isn't known. It is known that her grandfather, Professor Waddlemeyer, was killed by a crime lord named Taurus Bulba during a botched attempt at stealing the Waddlemeyer Ramrod. Beyond this, VERY little is known about Gosalyn's former life. There is speculation, however; Prequills, an excellent fanfic series by Christie and Larry deSouza, explores the history of Professor Noel Waddlemeyer and his family. Plug, plug. ;) It's not the only story out there to do so, but they really flesh out that universe. Incidentally, someone once noted that the fact that Gosalyn seems to have grown up with an inventor in the close family may explain her fascination with "Keen gear"...

Q: How did Gosalyn meet Darkwing?
A: Well, it's a long story that is told in the movie, "Darkly Dawns the Duck". Basically, Taurus Bulba stole the Waddlemeyer Ramrod from Professor Waddlemeyer, but the inventor was killed before Bulba could get the access code. Gosalyn was Waddlemeyer's only living relative, so Bulba tried to have her kidnapped from the orphanage she was at. Darkwing reached her first, and tried to protect her from Bulba until he could stop the crime lord's plans. During their time together, Gosalyn took a shining to Darkwing, and Darkwing found someone he could truly open up to and appreciate in Gosalyn. After Bulba was defeated, Darkwing adopted Gosalyn, and he and Launchpad (Darkwing's new sidekick) and Gos found a house and set up a suburban life. All of this takes a few days; the rest of the series apparently picks up right where the movie leaves off (except that it skips the transition into suburbia), so Darkwing and Gosalyn appear to still be getting used to each other in some episodes.

Q: Why is she friends with Honker? The two seem like total opposites.
A: It's true, they are mostly opposites. Gosalyn is loud and outgoing and tomboyish, while Honker is quiet, shy, and a brainy bookworm type. But Gosalyn isn't the type to just hang out with jocks; she's got a sharp mind to go with her thirst for adventure, and she doubtless likes having someone around who is intelligent enough to talk to her. But let's not overlook the fact that Honker will do pretty much anything she tells him to, either. ;)

Q: So is this kid just a brat or what?
A: Don't let Darkwing hear you say that! No, that's not Gosalyn at all. She tends to act before she thinks, especially in times of high tension; but she's clever enough to save her father at times, as well as being extremely caring and, for the most part, good-natured. She can come across as self-absorbed at times, but she can also be quite selfless when the crunch comes down. For the most part, Gosalyn is still alternating between a mature healthy mind and a typical nine-year-old. The nine-year-old tends to win out a lot, that's all. ;)

Q: What purpose does Gosalyn serve on the show? I mean, in terms of her role, why was she added?
A: Several reasons, I'd say. First, she's a strong female character. In terms of bravery, ability, and smarts, she's probably one of the highest ranked on the show. On average, anyway. Great role model for girls. :) Second, she's a kid. Most Disney Afternoon shows have kids as either central or secondary characters, from Gummi Bears through Goof Troop. (Rescue Rangers is an exception in that lineup.) I guess it's cause of who the show is aimed at or something. Third, she's a character type- the adventure seeker. We have Launchpad for comedy relief/goodhearted dunce, DW for main protagonist, and Honker for the brain. Gosalyn fits right in. :)

Q: Who is the Quiverwing Quack?
A: This would be Gosalyn's hero persona. When Launchpad took her out to get a set of arrows, Gosalyn discovered a hidden talent with them and was even able to take out Negaduck in combat. (She did have surprise on her side, of course.) She adopted the Quiverwing Quack identity to fight crime- which really bothered Darkwing. Quiverwing was retired at the end of the episode, because she finally agreed with Darkwing that she was too young; however, she returns to the main front every now and then.

Q: What episode does Quiverwing Quack first appear in? (Submitted by jessica_j_@hotmail.com)
A: Coincidentally enough, it's called "The Quiverwing Quack". *g* Although she retires at the end of the episode, agreeing that she needs to be older before she can really be a hero, she's very popular in St. Canard and returns in the second season episode, "Paint Misbehavin'", when she and Darkwing are both guests at a comic book convention that is crashed by Splatter Phoenix.

Q: Is Gosalyn too much of a tomboy to wear a dress?
A: Yep. There may be one or two occasions in which they manage to cram her into a dress- the time she was the Fairy Princess in her school play comes to mind- but for the most part she steadfastly refuses it. She was once heard to exclaim "But I don't WANNA be a lady!"

Q: Then who the heck is the Gosalyn lookalike with the head of curls and the party gown?
A: Ah- this is NegaGosalyn. This kid is Negaduck's ward in the Negaverse... Essentially Gosalyn's opposite. She'll give you cavities if you get within five feet of her, but she is cute and didn't deserve to have Negs as her guardian. Although she didn't seem to mind, really. This kid seems happy no matter who she's with, she skips instead of walking, and she always talks with a cheerful lilt to her voice. She makes the Care Bears look surly. ;)

Q: What about Gosalyn's lack of pants?
A: Don't start that again.

Q: During my endless quest to find more Darkwing info. I saw that according to one of the disney encyclopedias, Gosalyn is Drake's neice. Where did that come from? (submitted by fuzzybuttpony@aol.com)
A: In one of the earlier concepts of the show, Gosalyn was indeed going to be Drake's niece rather than his adopted daughter. The idea was changed before the show was formally released, but there are a number of information sites out there that got their info on Darkwing from that outdated concept, and they report the wrong relationship. I always thought it was sort of interesting. Incidentally, that's even made it into the Disney Trivial Pursuits game, though I shouldn't give away a freebie answer. ;)

Q: Is it true that Gosalyn may be related to Morgana? (submitted by TheFearsomeFive@aol.com)
A: Well, not based on anything that the series has ever actually indicated. The only places I've seen that theory put forth have been in fanfics. Not that there's any direct evidence to contradict it - in fact, the show not only gives them a very slight resemblance in character design (green eyes, round faces - well, it's SOMETHING), but Gos is very very interested in the "Monster" lifestyle and likes the idea of magic. Morgana's father and other relatives find Gosalyn interesting, too - her spirit apparently is a lot like what Monsters would use to perform magic, things like that. But the series never actually suggested any relation between them.

Q: In what episode does NegaGosalyn first appear?? (submitted by Ditzysixty@hotmail.com)
A: "Life, the Negaverse, and Everything" is the only episode NegaGos was ever in. Unfortunately. It would've been great to get to see "our" Gosalyn see her negaverse counterpart!

Q: Will Gosalyn still live with his dad? (submitted by BAYWATCHAL@AOL.COM)
A: Okay, well ... gotta be honest here and admit that I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. :-/ I'm kinda wondering if the question got cut off and only part of it was sent? Taking it at its face value I'm reading it as, will Gosalyn continue to live with her adopted father after she gets older? I don't see any reason why she wouldn't; Drake may be her adopted father, but they have a very close, caring bond and I don't think that Gosalyn would decide to turn her back on that when she gets older. :)

Q: Do you think Gosalyn and Honker will ever become more than friends? (submitted by rmr@nbga.net)
A: Well, many fanfic writers certainly seem to think so. ;) The only trouble with a question like this is that I have to answer from my own personal opinion only; there's no way for me to answer it factually from the show, so keep that in mind. ;) I don't know if she and Honker would end up marrying one another or not, but I think it's a pretty sure bet that they would date one another once they got old enough. They seem pretty well compatible, they know and respect each other, and are comfortable around each other... As to whether it would work out or not, I guess it could go either way. I'm not personally attached to the idea that they'll marry when they grow up, but that doesn't mean I have anything against it, either. ^_~ But I guess the short answer to this question is, yes, I think they probably would become more than friends when they get older. *g*

Q: Is Gosalyn a goose? (submitted by anonymous)
A: No, despite the fact that her name is a play on "gosling", the term for a baby goose, I'm pretty sure Gosalyn is a duck. Honker is a goose, and as such he has a differently shaped bill than she does. Gos's bill is a duck bill. Which would lead one to figure that Honker is actually only half-goose, since Herb Muddlefoot is apparently a duck as well... hmmmm. *G*

Q: What ever happened to the Crimson Quackette? Did the character ever resurface? (submitted by ganetter@xula.edu)
A: No, the Crimson Quackette was only in one episode, "Dances With Bigfoot". Unless of course you count the time Gosalyn mentions it as a possible superhero identity in "That Sinking Feeling". ^_~ Additionally, I haven't heard much about the identity popping up in fanfics, either. Apparently it's just Quiverwing Quack, or nothin'. ;) Kind of a pity - I liked that costume...

Q: Will there ever be a new season of Darkwing Duck where it shows Gosalyn is in her teenage years? (submitted by Elenna4879@aol.com)
A: How interesting you should ask that. As it turns out, Tad Stones - the creator of "Darkwing" - had pitched just such an idea for a series to Disney recently. The idea was ultimately rejected, but there was some discussion on the subject at the DAFT chat or mailing list or something. I suggest going by the DAFT homepage to get more details if you're interested. :) I seem to recall that they even had potential character model sheets that were shared with the fans there. Lucky devils. ^_~

Q: Has Gosalyn ever just worn her hair down? (submitted by anonymous)
A: Not casually, no. The only times we've seen Gosalyn with a hairstyle other than the usual one were when she was in some kind of "costume"; Nega-Gosalyn had an elaborate Shirley Temple-style hairstyle, and "our" Gosalyn has worn her hair in a sort of "formal" way with curls and an upsweep. But that's only once or twice. We've never seen her with her hair just plain down.

Q: i keep think that i saw this one episode where gosalyn knew of this special fuel and someone was out to get her for it but when they got it out oh her she tricked them and the fuel ended up like bubbles am i right on this or am i think of some other cartoon? (submitted by drake623@yahoo.com)
A: I'm gonna be honest here and admit I have no idea. *g* This sounds vaguely familiar, but it doesn't sound like a DW episode to me. There was the origin "movie" for the series, in which Taurus Bulba was after Gosalyn because he thought she knew the code to the Ramrod... but that's not close enough. Anyone else have any ideas?

Q: A lot of the show is based on Gosalyn's relationship with Darkwing/Drake. What is her relationship like with Morgana? Does she look up to her as a Motherly figure? (submitted by TboneChic03@aol.com)
A: Well, she definitely gets along with her. Gos and Morg seem to have an understanding of each other that is quite different from the one between Drake and Gos; they pair up very well, like in "Hot Spells" and parts of "Just Us Justice Ducks". There's not actually any sign that it's a maternal relationship, since Morgana isn't really shown in an overtly motherly role; but they are definitely friends, and not only because Morgana is dating Gosalyn's father. It seems like they just personally really like each other, and as such it's very possible that they could have a mother/daughter relationship develop really easily.

Q: We know that Gosalyn isn't a shining star in the world of elementary school academics, but does the series ever get any more specific about what scholastic subjects she is weak in or possibly strong? For example, I'm sure she's good in P.E.! Also, I've wondered how she does in Chemistry and other science classes because of her grandfather. She certainly has a command of the terminology when she explains the Waddlemeyer Ramrod in "Darkly Dawns The Duck," but maybe she was just parroting things she had heard her grandfather say a lot? (submitted by cartoon6@hotmail.com)
A: Oh, sure, Lauderdale. Make me actually have to *think*! LOL Well, I can't say that I know offhand of any subjects Gos is said to be good in, but I agree with you that she'd get high marks in P.E. by necessity. The only time I remember seeing her do chemistry homework was (I think) in "Whiffle While You Work": she combined a few "compounds" and ended up making a chocolate cake. But oddly enough, she really seemed to know what she was doing. *shrug* ^_~ Thanks to "Whirled History" we know that history isn't her favourite subject at all, but she knows more of it than she thinks she does. She also hasn't been shown to be specifically bad in any subject, either - she's obviously quite smart - she just doesn't like doing the work. Regarding her understanding of the Waddlyemeyer Ramrod, though - I think she was parroting the "official" definition of the device, since she just rattled it off and ended with "I think it makes things float an' stuff." *g*

Q: What's this girl, Gosalyn's favorite thing to do after school? (submitted by shiningrockstar@comcast.net)
A: Sports. Or video games. Or trying to get in on one of her father's cases. Or basically, anything that is not homework. :D

Submit a question!

Alrighty folks, that's it. No more questions. This was supposed to be for people to ask me questions about the show - not to spam me with random words sent by bots, not to ask me to conjecture on what a character's favourite food is or what they do in their spare time, and not to send me a million messages about how you are a character's wife. That's very fun for you, but what am I supposed to do with it? And, to be fair, I haven't updated the FAQ with the few valid questions I've received in something like two or three years. So, I'm afraid, no more submissions but please enjoy the stuff that's already up here. I'll try to get the remaining good ones up someday soon - it's hard with two kids - but if it involved anything like "What does so-and-so do when they're NOT being a villain?", it's not going up here. I can answer stuff from the show. I can't pull magic answers out of my hat. I didn't invent these characters. Sorry to burst your bubble. (And I promise, I'll change this message to be nicer when I'm less annoyed by the spam I've been getting from my good-natured attempt at letting fans have an interactive page. That'll show me, huh? Thanks for ruining everyone's fun, Internet.)
