Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How old is Drake? Where did you get the approximation of 37 years old?
A: Well, *ahem* I put a bit of thought into this one day. It has never been said for certain in the series, but unlike a few of the other characters, a few concrete events have been alluded to in Darkwing's chronology. In "Clash Reunion", Drake Mallard attends a high school reunion. Now I don't know if they do five-year reunions, but I'm not under the impression that they do; this would imply that it's either his ten- or twenty-year reunion (I can only assume that they do both, at least in St. Canard). Then we have the flashbacks - and judging from the fashions that the high school kids are wearing in these scenes, I'd put it in the early seventies. The bright colours were, I believe, a bit of a holdover from the psychadelic sixties; granted I wasn't alive during this time but it makes sense to me. *G* This rules out the ten-year reunion, since if it were ten years ago the year would be 1982 (and I WAS alive then and they didn't dress like that). Therefore we can suppose that it's his 20-year reunion, and that Drake was in the class of 1972 - and if he were 17 when he graduated in '72, by '92 he'd be 37. Of course, that's just my thinking - get yer own theories if you disagree. ^_^

Here's another argument for this question, submitted by darkwingtower@juno.com: "Well, in Clash Reunion, we're made to believe that that's the first reunion he'd been to 'cause he was just now seeing all these people again. Well, if that was his ten year reunion, than he'd only be 28. It would make sense. After all, you can't really take the fashion in the flashbacks into account 'cause it would've been the '80's & as I recall, the 80's were psychotic whore years. No offense if you're friends with any psychotic whores. That's all. So, if time works in this world like it does in St. Canard, he'd be around 31 or 32 now."

Q: Has Drake ever been married?
A: Another question shrouded in mystery. However, in this case I think it's safe to assume that NO, he hasn't. Drake seems to have a pretty solitary existence at the beginning of the series; as he says to Gosalyn, "before I met you, I didn't have a life worth risking". He had pretty readily given up his civilian identity by that point anyway; it seems like Launchpad and Gosalyn are the first "family" he's had in a while... If ever in his adult life.

Q: Is Darkwing really a competent crime fighter? I mean, really. He just gets lucky most of the time!
A: Not true, actually! Granted, he gets lucky a LOT of the time. But not most and certainly not all! In most cases, Darkwing does rely on his wits to get him through a case. There are certain episodes in which Darkwing is made out to be something of a bumbler; "Paint Misbehavin'" comes to mind... (ick). But those episodes are actually outnumbered by the ones in which Darkwing proves his competance. "Fungus Amongus", "Steerminator", and of course the movie "Darkly Dawns the Duck" are all excellent examples.

Q: So, if Darkwing was never married, then why does he have a daughter?
A: Boy, you must be basic if you have to ask that! Gosalyn is Drake's adopted daughter. They met in "Darkly Dawns the Duck", the series pilot movie. (Only an hour long, dangit.) Gosalyn is nine years old and quite a tomboy. She loves sports, particularly hockey. Her boundless energy drives away potential parents, until she meets Darkwing, who is the first person to understand her since her grandfather died. Check out Gosalyn's page for more information.

Q: Will Darkwing ever get married?
A: Well, personally, I doubt it. Even though he's mostly successful as a parent, I don't think Drake's personality and style would lend itself much to a marriage. Because let's face it, he's an egomaniac. Gosalyn is probably one of the only people he can really connect to, and even they have a stormy relationship. Darkwing's relationship with his sometimes-girlfriend, Morgana McCawber, is... Well, "stormy" is an understatement. However, I don't think Drake feels any NEED to get married, so it's probably not a real concern for anyone on the show.

Q: I once heard it said that Darkwing was basically Disney's version of Daffy Duck.
A: Bite your tongue! No one who WATCHED that show would say that. All of Drake's resemblances to Daffy are superficial. Sure, he's got an ego and a temper. Sure, he's a glory hog. Sure, he's pretty funny and even gets anvils dropped on him from time to time. BUT, Darkwing has character growth like Daffy never had. He's a lot more down to earth and, believe it or not, actually LESS ill-tempered than Daffy a good amount of the time. Plus, Daffy was never a superhero. Well... not regularly anyway...

Q: Why doesn't Darkwing wear pants?
A: Um... he's a duck. He doesn't need to. Pants are worn purely for decorational purposes in the Disney universe, it seems...

Q: Why is Darkwing so cocky sometimes? (Question submitted by KMCNWALK@worldnet.att.net)
A: Oh, just his ego. Darkwing loves the spotlight, and always has. Plus, even though he makes some stupid mistakes, he rarely runs into a problem he can't handle in the long run. So in a way, he has a right to be cocky. Even if it is annoying... ;)

Q: Is Darkwing ever going to get married to Morgana? (Question submitted by KMCNWALK@worldnet.att.net)
A: Recently I heard from a reliable source (who heard from another reliable source) that Tad Stones never had any doubt in his mind that Darkwing and Morgana would get married. In fact, to him, they were as good as married, and he even had the wedding scene all worked out in his head. So, it seems that, no matter what some people think- Darkwing and Morgana were supposed to be together in the long run.

Q: I was wondering if they ever made a final episode to end the DW series? (Question submitted by sundance@stic.net)
A: Not exactly. The last episode made, I believe, was "Malice's Restaurant". There's a line in there about Darkwing having envisioned it ending with a Climactic Battle Between Good and Evil, and instead getting blown up by Negaduck. Not a reference to the real end, but interesting that it's in that episode. They never made a final episode, however... unfortunately. In fact, there were plans for a third season which were never picked up by Disney. A few episode ideas floating around and the like. :)

Q: Did DW ever face Tauras Bulba a 3rd time? (Question submitted by sundance@stic.net)
A: Nope. Sadly, there are only two episodes with Taurus Bulba: "Darkly Dawns the Duck" and "The Steerminator". They obviously were planning to bring him back, in the third season, but it never got made. I also haven't heard of any plot ideas for season three involving Taurus.

Q: What does Drake Mallard do for a living? The show never even hints at any occupation (aside from crime-fighting) Is Darkwing funded by S.H.U.S.H.? (Question submitted by MBlac10550@aol.com)
A: This can really only be guessed at. The least likely answer is that Drake actually does work, we just never see him at his job; after all, we rarely see Herb Muddlefoot selling Quackerware, even though we know he does that. Three other theories are a little more plausible. One is that the Mallard family has a fairly large fortune, which Drake taps into for crime-fighting purposes (or, he may have inherited it, if you buy into the 'orphan' theory). Another is that Drake spent years investing a small amount of money and playing the stock market, and just was lucky enough to save up a LOT of money while he was training for crime-fighting. Third is that he IS funded by SHUSH. A lot of his gadgets, especially in the second season, were provided by SHUSH (computers and ray guns were constantly arriving at the tower from them), and on the back of one of Darkwing's toy packages it claims that even the gas gun and canisters were provided by SHUSH somewhere down the line. That confused answer is the best I can give. :)

Q: Correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while but wasn't there an episode or two that said DW and Negaduck were cousins from outerspace and that DW was named Stinky and was raised by Monks or something? (submitted by login@elkgrove.net)
A: You're not wrong! The episode was entitled "The Secret Origins of Darkwing Duck" and was pretty much exactly what you described. However, I wouldn't take it particularly seriously - it takes place in the future and retells the story of how Darkwing met Launchpad (and Gosalyn - sort of) with details other than the ones that were put forth in "Darkly Dawns the Duck" - so it's better to assume that this was an Imaginary Tale, the kind which Superman comics used to have (I loved those *g*).

Q: Is Drake related to Scrooge McDuck? (submitted by AAyris@USCO.com)
A: Hm, well, it's never said that he isn't... But then again it's never said that he is. I can sort of see a basic resemblance, what with the cheek feathers, but they have differently shaped bills and facially don't look a whole lot alike. But heck, anything is possible, if that's what you'd like to think. ;) There IS a Mallard in Scrooge's family history, though we don't know if he's also in Drake's. Read here to see!

Q: Where does Drake Mallard live? Address might be good, but I was also pondering where on the seaboard. Obviously they live on an island just a little ways near the ocean. (submitted by pfafmr74@snyoneva.cc.oneonta.edu)
A: Well, his address is 537 Avian Way. As for where St. Canard is - it's never explicitly said, although the show's creators (Tad Stones et al.) basically thought of it as a cross between San Francisco and New York. I think it's considered to be on the East Coast... after all, their weather seems to be more north-easterly than westerly. I don't really know though. :)

Q: You said that Drake mentioned his mother in the present tense, indicating she may still be alive. Just out of curiousity, could you tell us his exact words? (submitted by pluggers@Megavolt.zzn.com)
A: This was in part a small mistake on my part - DW actually mentions both of his parents, but it is in the present tense. It's in "Twitching Channels", when Thaddeus Rockwell comes face-to-face with Darkwing Duck and tells him, "I created you!" Darkwing's reply is "Oh really? That's sure gonna surprise the heck out of Mom and Dad!" Totally non-conclusive, but it is interesting. :)

Q: How does Drake know when there's trouble? Doesn't he have a signal or something like Batman? (submitted by PigWraith@aol.com)
A: The closest thing DW has to a signal is the Remote Alarm Terminal, or RAT... It's been mentioned in a few episodes, the first one being "Slime Okay, You're Okay" (I think). Basically it's an alarm system that goes off - loudly - whenever a crime is being committed somewhere in the city. However, Darkwing forgot to figure out how to get it to tell him where the crime IS, so its usefulness is somewhat limited. *shrug* Other than that, Darkwing seems to just keep a good eye out wherever he can. He monitors the police radio, watches with binoculars off the Tower, stuff like that. Most of being a vigilante is being vigilant, after all. Heh - I made that up myself! ^_^

Q: What are the words to the darkwing duck theme song? (submitted by someoneunknown@whoever.com)
A: Heh, nice address. *g* I'm not going to answer that question here, but there are a number of places on the net that have the lyrics posted. I'll look up a link and post it here shortly, but in the meantime you can do a search on Yahoo or something and probably find plenty.

Q: Why doesn't DW wear shoes? He did in the episode where Bushroot grows money. (submitted by fuzzybuttpony@aol.com)
A: Hm... I never really thought of that! Such a big deal is made (by me at least *g*) that he doesn't wear pants, but I never thought that he doesn't wear shoes! Oh, well - most likely, he doesn't wear them for the same reason a lot of ducks don't wear them. In general, he doesn't need them. If he does wear them, it's because the costume, outfit, whatever he has on at the time requires them. Gosalyn wears shoes because she's a sports player; Launchpad wears boots because they go with his uniform; if Drake is dressing formally he'd probably wear shoes, but otherwise he has no real need to. That's my guess anyway. :)

Q: Do you think DW is justified in resenting Gizmoduck when he appears in St. Canard, or is he merely jealous? (submitted by tfduck@hotmail.com)
A: I think it's a little of both. Darkwing really doesn't like to have his territory infringed on, and Giz really does just butt in when he comes someplace. Plus, in "Tiff of the Titans", he seemed to get in the way more than help, in the beginning at least. He showed up in a situation he knew nothing about, and refused to recognize that there had been a crimefighter there already who knew the enemy that they were facing. But, in Giz's subsequent appearances - particularly "Up, Up, and Awry" - DW does seem more jealous than actually justified. Giz has superpowers, of a sort - he can therefore outdo him. So... little of both. *g* DW's ego is too big to be justifiably as frail as it is, but it's frail anyway, so he's a competitive little nutter. *G*

Q: Are they ever going to start making more episodes? I love Darkwing Duck and I always wondered why they ended it in the first place? (submitted by ditzysixty@hotmail.com)
A: Well, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. And most Disny cartoon series come to an end after three seasons at the most, these days. I think DuckTales and Gummi Bears went on longer than that, but most of their recent series didn't get more than three years. Look at Goof Troop, the Mighty Ducks, Quack Pack, TaleSpin, Aladdin, Hercules - most of those didn't get more than ONE year! As for new episodes, well, I don't work for Disney so I can't say. But seeing as how the show has been out of production for nearly ten years now - I wouldn't hold my breath about it. :(

Q: Up there somewhere you said that there might be a 3rd season of DWD, how long ago did you write that? (submitted by justinbsgurl4eva@aol.com)
A: Ummmm, that part of the FAQ I think I wrote in 1997. However, I didn't mean to say that there might be a 3rd season - I meant that they had had plans for a third season of episodes, if Disney was interested in continuing the series. However, that didn't go through. And I'm afraid I really don't know any details about how many episodes they had ideas for, or anything like that - I wish I did. :(

Q: This question isnt really about Darkwing Duck, it's about "Darkly Dawns the Duck". Will it ever be on, or is there anyway I could buy the movie? thank you. (submitted by justinbsgurl4eva@aol.com)
A: The movie is basically just the first two episodes to the series - it's not a full-length two-hour deal. (Cheaters.;) If you have Toon Disney, just watch Darkwing on there and they'll eventually show it. I don't know the programming schedules of any other providers, including any outside of the US. As for buying, "Darkly Dawns the Duck" is available on commercial video, for sale. You can try looking for it at video stores like Suncoast or Walmart, or you can do a search on Darkwing at Amazon or a similar online store if you don't mind shopping on the Internet.
